ISO 37000 Governance Standard
ISO 37000 Governance Standard. The International Organization for Standardization launched the ISO 37000:2021 Governance of Organisations — Guideline in 2021. It is advised to implement ISO standards as these standards are universally agreed by experts and thus can be used based on a global scale. Standards typically take in a vast range of pursuits, so what exactly does the launch of the ISO 37000:2021 mean for you?
Understanding the ISO 37000:2021 Governance of Organisations Standard
The ISO 37000:2021 Governance of Organisations — Guidance provides organisations and their administration bodies the means of governing rules to conduct their business fairly, further permitting organisations to operate effectively while paying mind to the organisational’s ethical and socially responsible facets structure. Demonstrating excellent governance builds trust with the internal team and the external teams concerning the organisation and enhances corporate performance while promoting social and environmental integrity.
The ISO 37000:2021 Governance Standard guides the governance of organisations of all industries, sizes, geographies, constructs, or objectives. The standard offers rules and essential facets of systems to guide governing bodies and groups towards meeting their obligations so that the organisations they govern can satisfy their purpose. With purpose and sustainability being at the heart of governance, more organisations than ever are being called on to guarantee that their organisations act with sense, sustainability, and humanity in mind in a hastily fluctuating world and challenging times, and we here at ABAC® are happy to be a part of the undertaking.
ISO 37000:2021 was established by experts and trusted voices from a comprehensive range of organisations in over 70 countries worldwide to produce a specific, universally recognised standard for good governance. The ISO 37000:2021 looks to bolster the vital requirement for efficient management and opts to achieve this through a transparent core control system and a reliable assurance process when dealing with stakeholders and other third-party associates. Furthermore, ISO 37000:2021 places prominence on the belief that management sets the tone for a morally exact organisational culture and reinforces the prerequisite to warrant the strategic and accountable use of data while ensuring that any decisions are made translucent and affiliated with broader societal prospects.

Organisations that choose to implement ISO standards do so for several reasons
One of the most common drivers to implement a management system is to either improve efficiency or reduce overheads and manage risk around key assets of a business. Organisations now look to implement similar systems to address multiple areas of the business and in turn improve the overall efficiency and productivity of the organisation.
I already have an implemented management system, can I implement more?
Depending on the structure of the organisation some would run multiple management systems independently. For example, it is common to see a Quality Management System (QMS) and a Health and Safety management system both in place but implemented separately. However, to maximise the potential of these management systems it is advised and now becoming more common to integrate the management systems as a single system. Integrated Management Systems (IMS) allows your organization to conduct integrated audits and assessments, as well as optimize processes and resources.
With an IMS, your management systems work together, with each function aligned behind a single goal: improving the performance of the entire organization. Instead of silos, you have a coordinated effort that is greater than the sum of its parts and is not only more efficient but more effective. An integrated system provides a clear, uniform image of your entire organization, how they impact each other, and the associated risks. Efficiency is gained from less duplication, and it becomes easier to adopt new systems in the future.
Why does integrating your ISO standards works?
When you can integrate these systems, it can help reduce the time it takes to do certain activities, eliminate the amount of time interrupted and therefore reduce costs. An Integrated Management System (IMS) allows your implementation team to create one system that helps to deliver your organisation’s objectives effectively and efficiently. An IMS of two or more management systems can:
- Reduce costs
- Minimise downtime of key systems
- Reduce external audits
- Reduce conflict
- Increased performance
- Employee and customer satisfaction
- Continuous improvement
An integrated system provides a clear, uniform image of your entire organisation, how they impact each other, and the associated risks and it becomes easier to adopt new systems in future.

Why get certified to ISO standards?
Certification to ISO standards or British standards demonstrates that your organisation works to international or national best practices, confirming your credibility and competence to stakeholders and customers. Certifications are legally obligated in some industries, while they are often included in tender requirements in other sectors. The guidelines set forth by the standards apply to all types and sizes of organisations and aren’t restricted by industry, risk exposure or geographic reach.
ISO stands for International Organisation for Standardisation, whose standards address basic requirements that should be documented and followed rigorously within the company’s scope. These systems can be for quality, environment, safety, or any other aspects of a company. ISO has developed and published more than 23,528 International Standards. When a company implements these systems and applies for certification through an ISO certification body, it needs to clear a surveillance audit and a certification audit. The certification body audits the company’s system and adherence to the bare minimum requirements mentioned in ISO. On successful completion of an audit, the organisation is ISO certified by the certification body. This cycle is repeated every three years to ensure the system’s effectiveness, along with a surveillance audit every year.
